REVIEW OF "WAY DOWN DEEP INSIDE"004 Under the Radar Music Group USA/ On Core Records Australia
Harper's "Way Down Deep Inside" CD Review by Brenda Parks, Freelance roots music writer, 2003
Singer/songwriter and brilliant harmonica performer "Harper has come full circle with his new CD "Way Down Deep Inside" This 11 track CD see's the composer reaching deep within and defining his creative style as a composer and a musician. His lyrics are confronting, his voice powerful, soulful and velvet toned. As for his harmonica playing, well what can one say. The man plays the harp like it is a guitar. His rhythmic vamping, acoustic single note beautiful melodies and his wild virtuoso scaled runs complete with squeals and harmonic feedback, tells us this guy is a genius. "Way Down Deep Inside" is however more than a CD which demonstrates Harper's harmonica abilities. It is a CD of incredible song writing and story telling. Harper writes about the Australian Aborigines' "Stolen Generation" and "Deaths in Custody" in his provocative "Does Anybody Really Care". Harper includes the Australian indigenous instrument of the didgeridoo in this recording. This unusual combination with the blues harp is a truly innovative approach to the roots music genre. The deep woody tones of the Didgeridoo played by Steve Davies are highlighted in Harper's title track "Way Down Deep inside"(an ode to the indigenous people of the world). "Mystery"is an eerie and haunting reminder of the loneliness and isolation of life on the street. My favourite track on the album is "I Swear Im Innocent". The rootsy/ swampy style of the harp vamping with the slide guitar of Simon Patterson and the cheeky lyrics about been framed just gets me everytime. The acoustic love song "Soul food" is about finding one's soul mate. The dobro slide and acoustic harp make this song one you will play again and again. The final track on the CD will blow your mind. "As Strange as It Seems" about the slightly insane takes us through a series of schizophrenic episodes of perhaps the wildest and fastest harmonica playing you will probably ever hear in your life. Combined with a smooth soothing vocal melody and haunting keyboard , this song is a complete and welcome surprise at the end of the disc. "Way Down Deep Inside" is without doubt Harper's best release to date. It is a CD of great songwriting and musicianship. As the title implies, Harper has reached deep within himself and created an original and unique CD. 10/10
"Brilliant Blues and harmoncia artist, "Harper" is back with a stunning new album and live show...if you want to hear what genius sounds like, (Buy the album) or even better see him live",Georgia Curry, The Canberra Times, Australia
"Harper, the singer/songwriter and blues harp player is nothing short of world class, which is no doubt why the international blues circuit, like myself have been raving about him for years", Andrew Williams, Drum Media, Sydney, Australia.
"Way Down Deep Inside" is Harper's intelligent follow up to his successful 2000 release "Glass on The Stepping Stone". This CD is a project that documentary film maker might have done, if he could sing",Rick Coates, Northern Express. USA.
"Harper's lyrics are thoughtful and his singing is excellent", Blues Revue, USA.
"A cross between John Popper and Dave Mathews..a truly amazing CD", Chef Eddie, KERX, USA.
REVIEWS OF "GLASS ON THE STEPPING STONE"
"Harper's songwriting skill and eclectic musical attack allow him to compose a setlist that leads listeners on an exhausting emotional journey- a rare skill that this Perth, Australia native worthy of the last name only status he's attained. Andrew Miller, Pitch Weekly, Kansas City. USA.
"With eleven absolutely brilliant songs, ten of which are self written, Harper has a hit. The tunes are deeply introspective including a song to a lost sister. Harper's lyrics reflect the day and his music frames them like so many master works." 10/10. Mark A. Cole, Big City Blues Magazine, USA.
"As for his skills on the harmonica, Harper flutes on the instrument like a fluttering butterfly skipping among the flowers. Just like as the great composers tried to create images of stories in their listeners minds, Harper's harp compels us to see visions beyond sound. And they are sunny visions". The Kalamazoo Express, USA
"The disc showcases his ample songwriting talents packaged in music that can rock the house or cool things out. Think of his band as a bluesier version of Blues Traveler" Luther Keith, The Detroit News. USA.
"A songwriting and musicianship showcase" Mark "Radar" Watson, Mr Blues, Australia
"Harper is living proof of 15 minutes of fame with his harmonica playing, he is a true master…incredible skills at songwriting, this new album is perfection." Father Time, Mixdown Magazine. Australia.
"Harper is an artist who revels in the blurring of lines & the freedom it allows him to pursue his passion for playing. Harper has never sounded better, spicey proceedings with his harp, but generally concentrating on his singing. This album reinforces his positions as one of the best vocalists around". Lee Howard, The Herald Sun, Melbourne. Australia.
Harper has taken a traditionally American form of music & reinterpreted it with an Australian perspective. The resultant mix is a fresh & innovative, gumbo rooted in traditional roots music but with a new millennium relevance" Helen Farley, Rave Magazine, Queensland. Australia.
